This week I went on a personal journey of reading through some old journals. I wanted to find passages that were either meaningful or meaningful in the moment. What were some pivotal moments in my life? I would ask myself as I read through the many entries.
The reason I chose to explore through these journals is because as I continue making prints that are documenting my life, my journals do the same. I am exploring writing on paper before the cyanotype is done and will be excited to report back the results.

When I began reading through my journals, old emotions came flooding back fast. A fear I have within my work is getting personal. Throughout my life privacy has always been held with high esteem and when I confront my art with those private parts, I get scared. Scared of what others will think and maybe even scared of what I will see. An old saying among basket weavers is 'A weaver must be in a good frame of mind before starting their work, because if they are not then it will show in the weaving'. Being aware of this fear puts me one step closer to conquering it. As I approach these next few weeks I will remind myself of the quote from Art and Fear so that the work that I make will not only be personal but relatable to others.

This week I have continued the cyanotype process and I have had excellent results! Every single image that I exposed turned out clean with very few abnormalities. I am still deciding and working my way through the process to navigate where this best fits with my concept. The results are very nice but I am going to push this further and embrace that this is a personal narrative.

This week I was able to really take advantage of my materials and experiment with different processes. I did trial runs of cyanotype on wood panels and those did not turn out good at all. Traditionally cyanotypes are done on paper so that is what I proceeded to do next. The images I was able to produce turned out much better but I still wanted to push this medium further. That being said, I went back to contour drawings but in this case I used cyanotype solution instead of graphite. The image above is a product of that experimentation.

Here are some of the photographs taken this week. My intention is to capture life in it's raw honesty and how these images not only become a personal narrative, but how they can be related to most everyone. The image making is still in its first stages of growth, leaving me with many decisions to make. Instead of worrying about the many decisions, my sole focus right now is to experiment with what I know and what I know frustrates me.
I will be conducting my Cyanotype images this week! the images above will be turned into negatives and printed on a transparent sheet of film. The film will be placed over a panel that has been coated with cyanotype solution and exposed to the sun for 5-30 minutes. The weather has been rather unpredictable lately so I have found someone who uses UV lighting for his small in-house garden as a substitute to sunlight if the weather is not permitting when I am ready. Always be prepared folks!
Part of my assignment this week was to do a small series of blind contour drawings. Blind continuous contour is a drawing process where in my case I drew from life, however the entire time I was drawing (15-20 minutes) I could not look down on my paper. This process has not always been my favorite, but it has been a way that I can relax, focus, and make work. The image above is of a reclining model that I drew this week.
The rest of the week I spent more time focused on my everyday surroundings and what I do everyday. Capturing these moments through the lens of a camera I would take some images then hand over my camera with instructions as to what I was looking for. So far there seems to be some really good shots. Very excited to see how these images will look as a negative on transparent film!

Above is a piece by the amazingly talented Beth Cavener. The piece is titled "Limerence". Cavener has been an inspiration for my own work and process for several years now. Through the use of clay she is able to draw emotions that are relatable to us humans and cloth those emotions through a stylized representation of animals. It's this relatable emotion that I am most drawn to and what I would like to see within my own work.

My go to mediums for drawing are Charcoal and Conte Crayons. Using these two I am able to obtain a strong contrast and the use of multiple colors may create some nice values. Currently I am drawing on charcoal paper, but pretty soon I will be experimenting with charcoal on sheets of wood. Super excited for what is gonna happen next.

As I continued the 100 Bad drawing assignment I was able to begin thinking about what I wanted to explore this semester. I feel compelled to explore using the human body as my subject matter, because the human body is a universal theme of art. This universal theme connects people of different races, cultures, and beliefs. The body as it is used in art can be a tool to talk about gender, sexuality, and even identity. These themes are very close to me and I would like to delve further into them.
As I began to feel this draw towards the human body, I began to ask myself how? How should the body be presented? In what ways has it been done? Which artists inspire me to pursue this? What do I want to say through the use of human anatomy? Plenty to think about and a good place to start.

I had an amazing experience with the 100 bad drawing assignment! To not have the restraints of being required to make a masterpiece I felt free to explore and experiment with the word drawing. Drawing is essentially mark making. With that being said, there are so many options to what mark making can be. Could be traditional pen and ink on paper or maybe it could even be a piece of paper folded in on itself so that it is actually the paper that makes the mark. I even tapped into working on the human form and breaking it down to the most evident lines and how those lines move and interact with the other lines within the composition. I am excited to see where this drawing class takes me!

Welcome to my Advanced Drawing blog! I am very excited to start back into a previous medium that I haven't touched in a while. The first assignment that I have been given is to make 100 bad drawings on index cards. To be completely honest I don't know what a bad drawing means. A drawing with no effort? A drawing without a concept? A drawing that is not properly rendered? No idea whatsoever. Because the parameters are near to none, I am already beginning to explore what I can do and embrace the process of making and not necessarily have a plan behind the work yet.
